What is SOGI?
What does SOGI mean?
- SOGI stands for “Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity”.
- It’s a term that encompasses all individuals regardless of where they identify on the sexual orientation and gender spectrums.
- It is pronounced “SO-GEE”
Where did SOGI 123 come from and why is it important to educators?
- SOGI 123 is led by the ARC Foundation in collaboration with the BC Ministry of Education, BC Teachers’ Federation and school districts across the province of BC.
- SOGI-inclusive education is intended to be interwoven within all subject disciplines and connected to the B.C. curriculum.
- The implementation of SOGI 123 inclusive education is protected under the Canadian Human Rights Act and BC Human Rights code.
- Teachers in BC are legally required to teach SOGI 123 inclusive education.
What is a “SOGI Rep”?
- Rylee’s role as SOGI rep is meant to provide support to pre-service teachers in the Faculty of Education who are looking to implement SOGI 123 inclusive education.
- Rylee is in charge of curating SOGI 123 inclusive education materials including SOGI 123 policies and procedures, self-education materials, curriculum resources, and information for guardians and parents. All of these can be found in our “SOGI Resources” Google Drive folder.
- She is also the coordinator and facilitator of our new 2SLGBTQIA+ mentorship program. You can learn more and sign up by clicking the links in our bio.

SOGI Drive
Rylee Zondervan, SOGI Representative, has prepared a Google Drive of SOGI Resources. The SOGI Resources Google Drive is meant to increase accessibility to SOGI 123 inclusive education for pre-service teachers. The drive contains micro-education for educational staff, SOGI 123 policies and procedures, information for guardians and parents, educational materials, SOGI 123-approved lesson plans, and more.
